Copenhagen Imam explains Islamic rape

A Muslim Imam/mufti in Copenhagen, Shahid Mehdi, said, around a week ago, that women who don’t wear headscarves are “asking for rape”. Indeed he acted on this view. He attempted to commit such a sex crime. More specifically, Shahid Mehdi said:

“Women are not entitled to respect when they walk around without a Hijab. They are to blame for it when they are attacked.”

He elaborated further on the Islamic view of proper female behaviour. He continued:

“All the crimes that occur against women is because they are not covered. When they are not covered, you have no respect for them. ”

If you think it’s wrong of me to blame all this on Islam or the Koran, he too blames it on Islam. He talks specifically about various passages from that Ever-So-Holy Book – the Koran:

“She disobeys her master, there are two places in the Qur’an has ordered her to cover themselves (…) Women make a clean society dirty when they walk around without a Hijab. They are not entitled to respect and are not valuable as those who wear a Hijab. ”

Rape is therefore legitimate in Islam. Not only that. As a Mufti, Shahid Mehdi should also be listened to by the Muslims in his community. That is, as a mufti, he is a jurist who interprets Islamic law. That means that Mehdi is in a special position of authority as a Muslim scholar in Copenhagen.

All that is bad enough.

The terrible thing is, though, that the women who do wear the hijab, and even the full burka, are still frequently raped, probably sometimes by Imams like Mehdi himself, in Islamic/Muslim countries.

So all this appears to be to be a big attempt by Muslim males to legitimise the inferior status of women in Islam as well as legitimising the fact that they like to rape women regardless of how they dress.

In Pakistan, Afghanistan, Egypt, etc. Muslim women get raped even though they wear hijabs. Pakistan, for example (a state made specifically for Muslims) has the highest level of rape and abuse than any country on the planet. In Afghanistan, women who not only wear hijabs, but also the full burka, frequently get acid thrown in their faces as well as raped.

The only problem is that in an Islamic society such things are rarely classed as rape. But on the rare occasions that they are - the rape victim herself often (mainly!) gets the blame!

As usual, Muslims rationalise the irrational and the sick; just as they do with terrorism and the killing of civilians.

You will always find some pious Muslim, usually with a beard, justifying the unspeakable because that's what Islam and the Koran themselves do!

I'm an Agnostic Pakistani Feminist. I'd really like your source for this statement. If it's true, then it would be an invaluable statistic to share with my fellow feminists in our campaigns against sexual assault; if it's false, well then that's that.

    1. You're right. I didn't include any stats or sources. But this is a blog - not an academic journal. It's not even a newspaper. Maybe that's not an excuse.

If you read the article, as well as the post/link below, I specifically say that in Pakistan rapes are very often not classed as rapes and nearly always the victim is blamed. Thus if there are stats, they will be hard to come by or they may not be accurate. But I have read countless things which have said that Pakistan has a rape-problem worse that just about every other country - because of both Islam and its culture. (Islam is culture - so forget the culture-Islam distinction.)

Incidentally, I've also seen/heard many feminists make this claim.

Because TAQIYYA is so prevalent and ubiquitous in Islam, how do I know that you're not a Muslim pretending to be a feminist? Then again, I have heard the term "Muslim" or "Islamic feminist"; I've also heard the term "a square circle".

    2. I take back my accusation that you MAY be a Muslim masquerading as a feminist. I've seen your blog, etc.
